Here’s how it usually happens.  You send your kid to your parents so you and your husband can spend some quality time together.  So you go out and have dinner at a fancy restaurant and maybe have a bottle of wine.  You arrive home just before midnight and you see that you’ve just been robbed.  Your flat screen TV, DVD player, Playstation 3, jewelries and cash were all taken.  There are no signs of forced entry so you’re wondering if you left the door open.  But you’ll soon find out that a different thing happened as soon as the police tells you that your lock was picked.

Lockpicking is a necessary skill that’s often practiced by locksmiths.  As long as we use locks, there will be times when we’ll need the services of someone who can pick locks.  Locks come with keys.  Unfortunately, we usually don’t come with keys because we often forget or lose them.  Instead of wasting an obviously working lock by breaking it, we can call a locksmith so they can open it for us.

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t know how to do what locksmiths do.  However, there are some people who study the art of lockpicking not to help people, but to take advantage of them.  These are the people that would jump in at the opportunity to pick at your lock so they can take what they can.  So what can you do?  You should learn how to pick a lock.

That’s right.  No, you’re not going to learn so you can pick other locks and take what was taken from you.  You’re going to learn how to do it so you can learn how it works.  How’s that going to help you?  If you know how they do it, you can do things in order to be prepared.

For example, it’s important that you know the different types of locks:

  • Tumbler (Pin and wafer)
  • Lever
  • Warded
  • Electronic
  • Tubular

These are just some of the available locks today.  It’s important that you know all your options so you can choose the best one for your security!  For example, did you know that paper clips or bobby pins can pick tumbler locks?  If you study lock picking, you’ll learn the inside components of the locks.  Knowing how they work is the first step to knowing how to best secure your property.

You can also master picking all the common locks so you’ll have a better idea on which ones are hard to pick.  If you can pick a type of lock consistently in 3 seconds, then you probably won’t feel secured using it.  But if it takes you half an hour to pick a type of lock and you can’t do it consistently, then that would be a good choice based on your own experience.

You’ll also find out that there are specific locks that work best for specific situations.  You’ll also learn that the simple placement can spell the difference between a secured and burglarized home.  You’ll find out a lot of things that can help you.  You can think of it like learning how to defend yourself.  If you know hand to hand combat, then you won’t be victimized easily.  If you know how to pick locks, then let’s see them try to break into your home with well-planned locks.
